Science cannot provide proof
Apologists often point out that there is no proof that certain scientific theories, such as abiogenesis, are true. This is a misunderstanding of what science attempts to produce. Science generally attempts to develop a descriptive model of phenomena that can yield predictions. The model or theory is compared against available evidence but at no point is it proved. This does not diminish the value of a theory, when used within certain bounds.
- "despite their best efforts, scientists have been unable to prove that life can spring from nonliving molecules."
This type of statement is usually the prelude to an argument from ignorance.
