The Catholic Church is lead by the Pope who resides in the Vatican, a city state inside Rome. St Peter's Basilica is the church building most associated with the Pope, although it is not a cathedral.

The Pope or 'pontiff' is the Bishop of Rome and leader of the Catholic church. He is thought by his followers to be infallible when speaking ex cathedra — that is, when giving an official pronouncement on a matter of doctrine.

The current pontiff, elected on 13 March 2013, is Pope Francis, formerly Jorge Mario Cardinal Bergoglio. As the first to use that regnal name, Francis has no numerical identifier.
