Muhammad is regarded by Muslims as the greatest and last of a succession of prophets. He is believed to be the most important messenger sent by god. It is through Muhammad that Muslims believe god has revealed the Qur'an. The qur'an was allegedly ordained to Muhammad through the angel Gabriel who was sent by god. Muhammad received this revelation over the course of 23 years.
