John the Evangelist is traditionally thought to be the author of the Gospel of John and the three Epistles of John.

He is also traditionally thought to be John of Patmos, the author of the Book of Revelation. Many denominations consider him to be John the Apostle and Saint John.

The association between John the Evangelist, John of Patmos, and John the Apostle, along with the authorship of the five books attributed to him, has been a subject of controversy between New Testament scholars since the third century. [1] The date of authorship of the Gospel of John (between 90 and 100 CE) makes it unlikely that John the Apostle (born around 1 CE) was the same person.
