The following list is ''what we'd like to use'' for our '''interwiki map''' (see [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/InterWiki InterWiki] at Wikipedia for background information and [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Interwiki_map Wikimedia's Interwiki map] for an example), but '''the functionality hasn't been added to this wiki yet'''.

An '''interwiki map''' is a list of "shortcuts" that enables the [[Help:Editing|editors]] of a [[Wikipedia:Wiki|wiki]] to use simple [[WikimediaMeta:Help:Link|"internal style" wikilinks]] to link to specific pages on external wikis or other websites, provided that those sites have a predictable [[Wikipedia:URL|URL]] format. ==Usage==

The websites listed below need not be [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki wikis], but they do need to have a well defined page name structure that lends itself to wiki links. Don't add a site unless its pages can be predictably linked to using a link of the form
+
An '''interwiki link''' is a link of the form:
: <nowiki>[[</nowiki>''SitePrefix'':''PageName'']]
+
: <tt><nowiki>[[</nowiki>''SitePrefix'':''Target page'']]</tt>
where ''SitePrefix'' will be replaced by a fixed ''URL'' (as listed below, with ''PageName'' substituted for "$1"). Note that ''PageName'' can contain spaces, but these will be converted to underscores(_) in the final URL, not plus signs (+) nor hex codes (%20).
+
where ''SitePrefix'' comes from the table below and ''Target page'' is the name of the page at the remote site.

The ''SitePrefix'' codes, which are [http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/case_insensitive case insensitive], must not contain any spaces (&nbsp;), colons (:), ampersands (&), or equal signs (=) &mdash; in fact, we probably should just avoid punctuation completely &mdash; and should also not match any of this wiki's [[Project:Namespaces|namespaces]], nor any [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_639 ISO 639 language codes] (en, de, fr, ...), just in case we decide to expand Iron Chariots to separate language wikis in the future (see [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Interlanguage_links Wikipedia:Interlanguage links] for more information).
+
Examples:
 +
* <tt><nowiki>[[</nowiki>Wikiquote:Albert Einstein]]</tt> appears as  [[Wikiquote:Albert Einstein]] and links to <tt>http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Albert_Einstein</tt>
 +
* <tt><nowiki>[[</nowiki>Wikiquote:Albert Einstein|]]</tt> (note the "<tt>|</tt>") appears as [[Wikiquote:Albert Einstein|Albert Einstein]] and links to the same location

Finally, please keep the ''SitePrefix'' codes '''easily identifiable'''. People should be able to tell what site you're referring to, more or less, even if they're not very familiar with the "wikiverse" (for example, using "wikt" for [http://en.wiktionary.org/ Wiktionary] is a bad idea, even if it is an acceptable prefix when linking from Wikimedia sites).
+
As these examples show, ''Target page'' can contain spaces; these are converted to underscores (<tt>_</tt>) in the final URL.

With the foregoing caveats in mind, feel free to add any wikis or other ''relevant'' websites to the table below. Please keep the entries in alphabetical order.
+
Note that ''SitePrefix'' is completely [[Wiktionary:case insensitive|case insensitive]], so capitalization does not matter. ''Target page'', however, usually must match the remote page name exactly.

 +
Occasionally, an interwiki link is misinterpreted by the [[Project:MediaWiki|MediaWiki]] software as something else. If this seems to be happening to you, try using a colon (<tt>:</tt>) in front of the ''SitePrefix''.
 +
* <tt><nowiki>[[</nowiki>:Wikiquote:Albert Einstein]]</tt> works exactly the same as the original example above

An interwiki map is a list of "shortcuts" that enables the editors of a wiki to use simple "internal style" wikilinks to link to specific pages on external wikis or other websites, provided that those sites have a predictable URL format. For further background information, please see Wikipedia:InterWiki.

Contents

Usage

An interwiki link is a link of the form:

[[SitePrefix:Target page]]

where SitePrefix comes from the table below and Target page is the name of the page at the remote site.

Examples:

As these examples show, Target page can contain spaces; these are converted to underscores (_) in the final URL.

Note that SitePrefix is completely case insensitive, so capitalization does not matter. Target page, however, usually must match the remote page name exactly.

Occasionally, an interwiki link is misinterpreted by the MediaWiki software as something else. If this seems to be happening to you, try using a colon (:) in front of the SitePrefix.

  • [[:Wikiquote:Albert Einstein]] works exactly the same as the original example above

Our interwiki map

This table contains only what we consider the most useful sites for editors working on the Iron Chariots wiki. The full interwiki map is available separately. Unless you already know what site you want to link to, you probably should stick to this list.

Iron Chariots additions/changes
SitePrefix URL Comment
BibleGatewayNIV http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=$1&version=31 Added (New International Version)
BibleGatewayKJV http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=$1&version=9 Added (King James Version)
BibleWiki http://bible.tmtm.com/wiki/$1 Added
WikiaCentral http://www.wikia.com/wiki/$1 Added
WikiaSite http://www.wikia.com/wiki/c:$1 Added
WikimediaCommons http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/$1 Added
WikimediaMeta http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/$1 Added
Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/$1 Added
Wikireason http://wikireason.net/wiki/$1 Added
Wikisource http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/$1 Modified default entry to new URL

Only administrators should edit this table, since it needs to match the actual interwiki map being used by the MediaWiki software.
