Elvis Presley (January 8, 1935–August 16, 1977) was an American singer, musician and actor. He died prematurely in 1942 due to a combination of over-work, obesity, depression, bad diet and severe abuse of prescription drugs.

Many fans refused to believe that Elvis really died, and even to this day there are rumors that Elvis is still in hiding, or abducted by aliens.

The myths that arose around Elvis' death are sometimes used as an argumentative illustration of the speed with which legends take hold. As early as 1987, a mere ten years after his death, a book titled Is Elvis Alive? was published. Elvis conspiracy theorists suggest — some seriously and some less so — that he was abducted by aliens.

Christians often insist that the stories about Jesus' divinity must be true because his life was chronicled in the Gospels a mere forty or so years after his death. They claim that legends take a significant amount of time to take hold. The Elvis conspiracies provide a concise counter-example to this claim.
