It is impossible to estimating how many Christian fundamentalists (especially fundamentalist women) worldwide live unhappily in abusive marriages due to the New Testament ban on divorce. It is similarly impossible to estimating how many Christian fundamentalists children grow up with problems because during their childhood they too often have to watch their parents abusing each other or have to watch father abusing mother. Jesus may have been celibate or he may have been happily married to Mary Magdalene but he certainly was no authority on unhappy marriages.

Reasonable moral philosophers will accept that in the area of marriage social scientists who understand the effects or different rules and systems should have an input. A strong case can be made that Utilitarianism can serve modern society better than any time honoured text.
