Murder of prominent atheists

A secular activist Nazimuddin Samad was murdered in 2016 after criticising Islamic fundamentalism. [1] This follows the murder of at least four other activists in 2015.

The prime minster blamed the victims for the attacks saying they wrote "filthy words" and “It’s not at all acceptable if anyone writes against our prophet or other religions. Why would the government take responsibility if such writings lead to any untoward incidents?” [2] Exiled Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen has said that the government is giving "silent support" for the killings. [3]

Fatalism

Due to fatalism, families in Bangladesh are reluctant to improve swimming abilities among children because their deaths by drowning might be "God's will".[4]
