Apophenia, also known as patternicity, is a tendency for people to mistakenly interpret random patterns as meaningful. This is one of the biases that make people more likely to believe in religion.

"Humans are pattern-seekers from birth, with a belief in karma, or cosmic justice, as our default setting. [1]"

When apophenia occurs in relation to a stimulus, such as an image or sound, it is also a form of pareidolia.
