When it comes to religion, and especially the occult, it becomes very useful to utilize the 'left hand path'/'right hand path' classification system. These systems primarily deal with the ''intent'' of a religious or philosophical practice.

=Right Hand Path=
In order to understand what the Left Hand Path ''is'', it is often necessary to understand what it is ''not''. The Right Hand Path generally encompasses one or more of the following traits:

* Faith
* Collectivism/denial of the self
* 'Unbounded' altruism
* Subservience to external forces

As such, religions like Christianity and Islam are classified as Right Hand Path.

=Left Hand Path=
As opposed to the Right Hand Path, the Left Hand Path tends to focus on the individual, free thought, proportional retaliation, and self-reliance or self-deification [http://www.dpjs.co.uk/lefthandpath.html]. Keep in mind that not all philosophies--on either side of this divide--will adhere to ''all'' of these traits; this is more of a generalization of the LHP and RHP.

The left and right hand path descriptions on this page are somewhat misconstrued. I'm quite educated on the left hand path (Satanism in particular, especially LaVeyan Satanism), and could maybe expand upon it if necessary. The main problem with the explanation provided is that it splits the difference between the paths by oversimplification--it says that the LHP uses magic for bad, while the RHP uses it for good. It ignores other major factors in the split (materialism versus spiritualism, egoism versus altruism, individualism versus collectivism), as well as the definition of 'magic', and of 'good' and 'bad'. Also, most materialists on the Left Hand Path would not threaten someone with spells, as that would make no sense. --[[User:St1rn3r|St1rn3r]] 18:50, 13 February 2009 (CST)

The problem with this argument is twofold:

# If "god" is defined as "everything", then the concept of god is essentially meaningless in any other context
## There is no particular reason to use the term "god", as opposed to "nature", or any other term. See: [[ignostic]].
# The pantheist argument is not an argument for any faith which makes any statement regarding the qualities of "god", since in pantheism "god" has no properties other than existence.
