Retired Corrections Officer and Security Specialist for over 25 years. After catching a nun trying to teach a lie, I became disillusioned with organized religion at the age of 13. That's when I began to realize that religion had sinister ulterior motives. I knew then that religion was merely about controlling people and maintaining the status quo. In my later teens, I began to seriously question the existence of god itself, and my agnosticism evolved into atheism. After a brief flirtation with Deism, I found I couldn't logically square that circle, and returned to atheism, where I've remained. I appreciate this site and sites like it, in the hopes that people will wake up and realize they're being held back from their true potential.

Just another guy fed up with religion....your friendly, next door atheist. The very fact that people still take religion seriously surprises me....By doing this, we are in fact putting stock in the tales and views of people that lived 2000 years ago. Complete and utter disregard for scientific method is what will hinder our ongoing progress and that is what, in my view, is religion all about.

I am a 22-year-old history student from the Netherlands. I was brought up in an anthroposophical family (which meant I received Waldorf education and went to a Christian Community church, both invented by Rudolf Steiner). At the age of 13, I was allowed to leave church, while in hindsight I think I've been an agnostic until about the age of 16. My best friend and I then started to declare ourselves atheists as soon as we learned what that word meant. We've been studying religion and history as a hobby ever since. My professional study focuses on the cultural history of the Western world, while I'm specialising in the study of religion (Christianity, Judaism and Islam in the Middle Ages, the sociology of religion, the psychology of religion, and religion and ethics).

I have quite some experience with working on Wikipedia, and have my own YouTube channel which I use to add Dutch subtitles to English atheist/science videos. I am an antitheist, because I am convinced that religion is not just untrue, but dangerous and needs to be challenged, and I want to use my skills to that end.

Started out life as an Atheist. My parents converted me and themselves to Mormonism when I was 8. I was stuck behind the Zion curtain until I was 18 and left for the Army. I "married in the Temple" in my 20's. My wife had an affair, and the LDS church defended her as being rescued from our marriage by god.

I left the LDS church and joined non denominational christians.

I worked for a church in Colorado and discovered the same level of hypocrisy in it as I experienced in the LDS church. Enough of my questions have gone unanswered that I am declaring myself an Atheist. I am a closet Atheist because I am currently married to a pastors daughter. This creates a difficult situation for me...

I'm reading many of the great works on ethics right now.

One of the reasons I'd like an account is to add some historical information that is relevant in the analysis of the Sermon on the Mount. In reference to turning the other cheek: this was actually good advice in and of itself. Romans would use the back of the right hand to slap someone across the face (impacting the right cheek and turning the head to the left). If you turn the other cheek, it becomes impossible to do damage with the swing (the hand in effect misses impacting the cheek). Misrepresentation of this "scripture" is that you are supposed to accept being beat up. The reality is people are being instructed not to allow an attack they know is going to happen. Consider the Russian proverb "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me" as a comparison.

If you are going to ask people to say things that are unpopular, does it make sense to accept being beaten and killed? No, what will eventually happen is all believers will be dead or incapable of "preaching." This is why Christianity has had to ignore this point and be on the offensive through most of history. If Christians actually did what was prescribed in the Bible they wouldn't exist.

I am an accountant and student of archaeology and physics.

I emerged from the Disciples of Christ almost entirely unaided just before puberty, spent a few years as an eager Buddhist, then dropped any remaining attachment to spirituality. Having many friends who remain religious, I occasionally attend church services to keep myself abreast of developments in the area, and maintain a running list of pros and cons of the institution.

Five years ago I was a active member of a fundamentalist Christian church. I sang in the choir, led youth groups, and was a fan of Dr. Kent Hovind.

Over the course of several years I became an atheist. My faith was critically shaken when I discovered that "Dr" Hovind was a fraud. Once I understood the facts about evolution, I started questioning the rest of the Bible. Did Jesus validate what Genesis said? If yes, then he must have been another fallible man. So which part of the Bible can I trust? It turned out that the Bible was full of errors, contradictions, forgeries, and propaganda. I eventually stopped going to church, but never thought of calling myself a Christian.

Thanks to Christopher Hitchens (and YouTube) I finally realized that I was an atheist. Accepting that fact motivated me to analyze what I believe. Since then, I have read nearly a hundred books on topics including: philosophy, physics, geology, biology, history, archeology, apologetics/counter-apologetics.

My mission is to help people live a more fulfilling lives by realizing that religious delusions only offer false consolation.

I grew up in secular Western Europe in an area right at the Dutch/German border. Even though baptised into Catholicism we, as a family never went to church. As an adult I eventually officially left the church. This is possible and very easy in Germany due to "church tax" and this process is nothing unusual at all. That means, I have an official government issued document that states that I'm in cahoots with the devil.

After I moved to the United States about ten years ago, I soon realized that people actually still take this religious stuff seriousl. I joined a number of national as well as local atheist groups and served on the board of one of them for a while.

On Ironchariots I am mainly interested in creating German language versions of existing articles. I have to admit that a caller from the Netherlands who called into the the Atheist Experience gave me that idea.

I have no credentials relevant to religion but I was a christian my whole life up until 7 years ago. I used to be a heroin addict and being one I ran into major problems in my life such as social, health, economic, legal and spiritual. At this time in my life i would cry out to god to help me, to soothe me and tell me everything would be alright. Nothing changed. The only thing good that came from crying out to god was the release of actually calling out to something. During this time i read the entire bible, cover to cover, no matter how boring it got (and man it got boring in numbers) I pushed on through and completed it. I also read the individual books of the bible many times. After a comprehensive reading of the bible I no longer believed because of the mass murder and sadistic nature of god, that was suspose to be a loving god. It wasnt just reading the bible that did it, it was also understanding world religion and how every region of the world had thier own religion and some even had religions that died out, and ones own religion determined where one lived. The final blow came when i checked my self into a ten week retreat to try one last time to understand god and at this retreat I engaged in some heavy duty bible study and prayer sessions. I felt nothing. I would see others during church and see them waving their hands, eyes closed, feeling the holy spirit, but I no longer wished to have it or think that its worth having. The concept of the christian god is a sociopath and is not fit for worship. I consider my self an intelectual and do have degrees in the human services field including mental health and substance abuse. I enjoy reading and hope to discover some good books to read while engaging in religious discourse with people on this site.

i am an atheist, and a recently (3/1/13) retired seaman after 40yrs deep sea. also an alcoholic/addict clean and sober 22yrs. 68 yrs old. i have lung cancer (diagnosed April 2012) which is currently non-active in the tumor, lymph nodes or anywhere else. old, tired, and trying to stay out of the way.
